Baby Boomers Face Death

Baby boomers are starting to die. They are dying because they are reaching the natural limits in time set for their species by biology. But as they draw near the terminus toward which all their lines of endeavor lead, a terminus, moreover, which was always in plain view, they panic. Why hasn’t someone done something about this before now? How could this have been allowed to happen?

Of course, they know all about death. They know all about everthing. They read “The Death of Ivan Ilch” by Tolstoy and “A Dreary Story” by Checkhov.

“Yes, death was a bitter pill to swallow before we, well, fixed things. But it’s ridiculous that we should have to die like the ignorant masses.

“We are the exception!””

  1. at the beginning of book 5, chapter 19, in Anna Karenina, Tolstoy, more or less inhabiting the thoughts of Levin, describes the difference between women’s acceptance of death and men’s horror of it. it’s quite something to read.

    1. Yes, thanks for that reference. I have witnessed this acceptance in a number of women, relatives and friends. They wanted to be comfortable; one of them wanted me to hold her hand, which I did. That was enough. Men stand apart from and athwart life. No so women. I am not sure all women are so blessed, but many more are than men, who as a rule “do not go gentle unto that good night”. Really? Life is a process that ends in death. Can you really be such a stranger to it?
